Charles Dickens' Great Expectations In the novel of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, one of the pivotal characters is a man named Abel Magwitch. To answer the question of whether this man is a criminal or a victim of society, we must first establish what a criminal is and what a victim of society is. A criminal is someone who knowingly breaks the law for self-gratification. A victim of society is someone who is subjected to outside influences, and is generally mistreated by society. In the context of this novel, a victim of society is also someone who has never been given a chance in life, and has no control over events that occur involving them. Therefore I am going to try and decide which of these two ‘categories’ the character of Abel Magwitch falls into. When we first meet Magwitch in Chapter one our first impressions of him are not positive. Pip describes him as a ‘fearful man’ with a ‘terrible voice’. Although we learn that he is in a terrible state, ‘smothered in mud and lamed by stones’, with a ‘great iron’ on his leg, indicating he has obviously escaped prison and is on the run, we as readers do not feel any sympathy for him. The reason for this is the fact that he is willing to threaten a young boy, seeming to enjoy the power he has over him is almost repulsive to us as readers, making him appear even more harsh. The fact that Magwitch is likened to a dog, he ‘glared and growled’ at Pip, does not help his case. This presents him as an animal, and serves only to alienate Magwitch from the reader. This means that we too share Pips reservations and suspicions about Magwitch throughout the opening chapters, even though it is clear that this man is scared, lonely and hungry enough to thre... ...me suffering as Magwitch. This belief would probably have evolved after his trial with Compeyson, which taught him that the law could be manipulated by class. This shows that Magwitch did not have many criminal intentions, and that he was tricked by Compeyson. In a sense Dickens is trying to show us how real justice can be hard to find. It is because of his low status and poverty that Magwitch never really had a chance. This shows how the justice system has been manipulated by society. Therefore, I think that Magwitch, while having acted like a criminal, is not to blame for his actions and it could be argued that he is even remorseful about them. This shows that he is not a criminal, but a victim of the society he lives in, because he was never given a chance to prove society wrong and make something of his life, he was just labelled and left in jail.

Accounting 302 9/18/12 Ernst & Young Guest Speaker Response After looking through the Ernst & Young PowerPoint presentation, there were certain points covered that were similar to our Sky Air activity from class. One of the key points covered was the idea of purchasing a company, and how much one would pay for it. It was brought to our attention from both the PowerPoint and class lecture that buyers and sellers may have different perceptions of value. This occurs because buyers do not want to â€Å"pay up front† for uncertain earnings.From what we learned in the Sky Air activity, Thyestean, the principal, is similarly concerned about whether or not Kaplan, the agent, will be loyal enough to provide accurate data and analysis of his own company. Both the PowerPoint and Sky Air focus on information asymmetry, and how it can be reduced. We learned that having an independent Board of Directors and external auditor would improve the accuracy in the information provided to the princ ipal, which will therefore reduce information asymmetry.Another concept we went over in the Sky Air activity that was mentioned in the PowerPoint was the idea that there may be risky acquisitions. We learned from the slides that in order to reduce the risk, the principal must include a request or incentive. The example described from the slides included a Technology company was being sold for $100m. The buyer agreed to purchase it, under the circumstance that it shall have to meet certain projections. This shows that even though the shareholder is affected in the long run, he/she will not be affected (negatively) drastically since there are certain mandatory projections to uphold.Similarly, in the Sky Air case, we came to the conclusion that if the buyer purchases the company, he/she should request that Kaplan’s compensation be linked to his profits, so that there is less risk (manager cares more about short-term, shareholder cares more about long-term, this way manager will care more too). Although the PowerPoint presentation was based more on the financial aspect of the company’s acquisition, it still provided relevant information that we learned in class, and too coincided with the Sky Air activity.

Poe was alone after his mother death. He wrote a poem named â€Å"Alone† that he wrote related to how he felt he was alone. Poe didn’t like his foster father, and didn’t get along with him. He wanted revenge on his foster father. A letter that he wrote to John Allan called â€Å"Letter to John Allan† That letter described how he felt about his foster father. All the literature he wrote was related to his own life experience. In Poe’s literature he has always one character that dies at the end. Poe always thought that his foster father insulted him a lot. He wrote a story name â€Å"The Cask of the Amontillado† which was similar to how he felt about his foster father. That story was about two persons, and one of them thought that the other insulted him, so he w anted revenge. That was the same thing that Poe wanted to do to his foster father. The death of Poe’s mother really impacted his life, and his writing. In the poem â€Å"Alone† he wrote that â€Å"From childhood’s hour I have not been as other were†¦.† That meant that he didn’t had the childhood like others had. Most children’s have parents but he didn’t he was alone by himself. His life was full of tragedy, so was his literature. For example the poem â€Å"Alone† that he wrote had this â€Å"Then in my childhood in the dawn of a most stormy life†¦.† That meant he has a life full of tragedy, and his life was very hard staring from childhood. Edgar Allan Poe’s life was one of many sorrows and difficulties, filled with death of close family members and many broken loves. Poe wanted a revenge on his foster father. He wrote a letter to him that described how he felt about him. Poe didn’t get along with his foster father because he thought John Allan was loose, and John Allan didn’t leave a penny for Poe before John Allan’s died. In the letter he wrote â€Å"Send me I entreat you some money immediately, as I am in the greatest†¦.† That line meant he wanted some money, he was asking for money from him. The letter that he wrote he showed no shame because he thought he deserved it for what John Allan said about him. For example in the letter he says â€Å"Again, I have heard you say (when you little thought I was listening†¦.† That line in the letter meant he has overheard John Allan say that â€Å"he meant nothing to him.† Poe’s foster father, John Allan was always insulting Poe. Poe had overheard him many times insulting him, so Poe wanted revenge, and didn’t care about the injuries John Allan had made. Poe’s story â€Å"The Cask of the Amontillado† is the best example of Poe thinking John Allan was insulting him, and Poe wanting revenge. In the story he wrote this quote â€Å"The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult†¦Ã¢â‚¬  That quote meant that Montresore wants a revenge, not for his injuries but for the insult, which was the same thing Poe wanted to do to John Allan. This story was related to wines; Poe was a man who drank a lot. In â€Å"The Cask of the Amontillado† Fortunato was the man that drinks a lot, which you could describe as Poe because Poe had a lot of tenses in life that made him start drinking, just like Fortunato. Test day will be here whether you've been studying or not.For the SAT, I would recommend delaying for a later test date, but that's not really possible with the PSAT. If youhave less than three weeks left, you're going to have to cram. So? How are you best going to preparefor the exam? In this article, I'll guide you through how to prepare quickly, including what to focus on for each section of the test and the best test-day techniques. Cramming for the PSAT: General Guidance There are a few over-arching principles that are crucial to the crammingprocess. Commit to Putting in the Time, but Don't Overstress the Test Time is of the essence,and you'll need tospend a lot of it preparing for the test.Don't give up on your homework, though- grades are hugely important in the bigger picture of college admissions, far moresothan the PSAT. The PSAT is not going to determine your fate. Its primary role is to help you understand where you stand as you start thinking about the SAT.No matter how good or bad your scores, colleges won't see them. The one thing your PSAT score does count for is theNational Merit Scholarship. If this matters to you, you'll probably need to put in more time to reachthe score cutoff for your state. Reading what's uncomfortable and unfamiliar builds new connections in your brain- not to mention that there's just more meat to dissect, anddissecting text is exactly what the test wants from you. The PSAT is going to present some pretty dense text, and you need to be at least somewhat used to looking at non-contemporary, formal, and/or academic literature.Read attentively and read critically, and get in as much as you can. Granted, this would work better if you were starting the process sooner, but even just acclimating to reading unfamiliar texts quickly will be helpful. If you dive right in now, it'll seem less stressfulby test day. Even a few hours of review can make a big difference in your score. #5: Get Comfortable With Your Tools for Math Review the formulas that will be given to you on the test, as well as those you'll need to have memorized. As for the ones in your test booklet, they're no good to you if you barely recognize them; get familiar with them. As for the rest, you'll be on your own on test day when you find you need them. Don't go beyond a simple warm-up, though: don't try to cram new material into your head. At best, it won't stick; at worst, it will muddle you up and stress you out. Feeling Panicky? Work It Out Self-talk is huge. How are you treating yourself? Kindly? Gently? Compassionately? Avoid being harsh or judgmental. Instead, affirm your assets: you've prepared, and you're ready. Put your game face on. Visualize the specifics of what's going to happen- and how you're going to handle it all like a champ. Let's try not to end up like this guy- he's not eveninside the test center yet. Answer Every Question There's no guessing penalty, so you can'tlose anything by bubbling in a choice. Do what you know how to do first. Next, eliminate answers where you can. Then, guess away! Guess on everything that's left. Leave nothing blank. Folklore in two cultures (Cultural Anthropology) - Essay Example This paper will describe and evaluate examples of folklore in Irish culture and Bhutan culture, in order to determine the values they convey while at the same time being entertaining and instructive. Bhutan, in the mountains of the Himalayas and bordered by India and Tibet, is still very much an oral society (Penjore, 2005) today, and one that is absorbed in their traditions with most people wearing traditional clothes (Mystic Bliss). One of their most prevalent folktales is the story of a man called ‘Meme Haylay Haylay’ and his turquoise stone (Penjore, 2005, p.259). The story tells of an old and impoverished man who finds a turquoise stone while digging in his fields. On his way back home he meets a variety of men with whom he makes a number of different trades; he trades his turquoise for a horse, the horse for an ox, the ox for a sheep, the sheep for a goat, the goat for a rooster, and finally he trades the rooster for a song. Singing his song and continuing his jour ney home he feels he is the happiest and richest man in the world (Evans, 2010, p.12). As this story is relayed by different people the ending changes in a number of ways, dependent on how they prefer to interpret the tale (Penjore, 2005) in terms of whether they consider the old man as foolish or as the provider of the secret to happiness. In another version he trades the rooster for a flute; while playing the flute he slips in a wad of cow dung and forgets how to play it and thus ends up with nothing (Penjore, 2005). Whichever version is preferred however, they are used as a satirical account of sound or bad business decisions and the making of profit, and thus while being a form of entertainment in their humor to be enjoyed by all who are listening, they are more importantly a vehicle of instruction; if taken from the perspective that the old man made sound business decisions by appreciating the futility of finding happiness with material possessions and wealth, the ridicule pert ains to the other men who traded their happiness for material possessions. If on the other hand, it is told with the belief that the old man is foolish, then it is used as evidence for bad business practice and one not to be imitated (Penjore, 2005). Within the folklore of Irish culture there is much reference to little people, of which the leprechaun is probably the most famous. Leprechauns are described as small, clever and roguish men who lived in Ireland before the arrival of the Celts. The story tells of these little men about two feet tall with green or red coats and leather aprons, working as shoe makers, hammering away all day long. Leprechauns are said to be unfriendly and miserly and while working on making their shoes, store all their money in a pot which they hide at the end of a rainbow. If you catch one of these leprechauns he will lead you to the pot of gold but if you take your eyes of him, even for an instance, he will disappear with the pot of gold. Also, if you fi nd the end of a rainbow you will find a pot of gold. Such a folktale is obviously entertaining, especially for children, and has been passed down through generations, and like the Bhutan folktale, is concerned with wealth. This tale however, illustrates the futility of believing that money and richness come easily but instead, like the leprechaun, people must work hard and save
